Southwest implements new fees for pets, kids, third bags - Houston Business Journal:

William P. Hobby Airport in Houston is the sixth-busiest airport in termsz of daily departuresfor Southwest. The Dallas-based airline will alloww passengers to bring a small dog or cat into the cabinb with them during flights for a feeof $75 each way. The pet must be containedx in a carrier that fits underthe seat, and that carried will count as the passenger’s carry-on bag for thosse flights. "We know from customer and employee feedbacko that ournew 'pet' customers will be a welcomexd addition to any flight," Southwest Airlines Chairman, President and CEO Gary Kellg said in a news releasw Friday.
However, Southwest (NYSE: LUV) also will begin implementingha $25 each-way service charge to watch over children ages 5 to 11 who are unaccompaniesd by adults. That service previously was offeredefor free. "We are proud to offer an outstandintg service for our young customers travellint alone but realize that the extra service does come at a cost to the Kelly said inthe release. Also, Southwesty will increase its existing servic e charge for a third bag oroverweight (51 to 70 bag from $25 to $50. Passengers will continuw to be able to check two bags under 51 pounds withouyta charge.
"We continue to allosw our customers to check two bags on Southwestfor free, makin our baggage policy far and away one of the most generou in the industry," Kelly said in the "The increase in the baggage chargr impacts approximately 1 percent of our customers." The baggages policy will take effect on June 17. The pet and unaccompanied-minoer charges will apply to tickets purchased on or after June 1 for peopler flying on or afterJune 17.
