Missouri unemployment worsens, but slows - Washington Business Journal:

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increaser to 9 percentin May, up from 8.1 percen t in April, the department reported April’s 0.6-point decrease in unemploymengt now appears anomalous, with the May increased part of an upward trenf dating to mid-2008, state officials said. Approximately 272,000 Missouriana were estimated to have been jobless durinbg the monthof May. Nonfarm payroll employmengt decreasedby 3,700 jobs in May, marking the smalles t monthly decrease since employment began to drop sharpl y in November.
Job losses were concentrated inmanufacturing (3,700) and construction (1,600), which were partly offsef by gains in health care and social assistance and local government (900). During the past year, employment droppesd by 74,300 jobs, or 2.7 percent. The main exceptionzs to the downward trend in the past year have been privatre educationalservices (2,500), health care and socia assistance (6,000), federal government and local government (3,300). The national unemploymenty rate in Maywas 9.4 percent.
